Jon GaluiCrossFit changed my life on the morning of June 15, 2010 when I walked into my first box.  The owner of the box explained to me the ‘WOD” and asked me what goals I wanted to achieve by coming in.  While telling him I wanted to lose my “love handles”, I was still trying to figure out what a WOD was.

First life changing experience

This particular WOD was called “Fight Gone Bad.”  I remember everyone being extremely sweaty and giving each other high fives or fist bumps. We started warming up and I was thinking to myself, “I know I am still out of shape but it can’t be that bad.“  Six months prior I went into the Police Academy weighing 260 pounds.  I lost 30 pounds over a six month period and knew I needed to lose more weight.  I wanted to get back to 190 pounds, the weight I was when I played Division I baseball for Jacksonville University, and I was willing to try anything.  Little did I know the impact that day would have on my life.

The WOD started and I went 100% right out of the box, little did I know that was a big mistake.  I made it through the WOD and felt like I almost died.  While doing the WOD there was a younger male doing it next to me.  Half way through the WOD, while I was dying, he was still going full speed.  He took off his shirt and he was shredded. At the end of the WOD I introduced myself to him and told him he wasn’t allowed to take off his shirt anymore.  He looked at me like I was crazy and I proceeded to tell him while barely being able to speak that it was because he made me feel like less of a man.  He started laughing and stated that he was one of the trainers and that he would get me to his level.  He then shook my hand and introduced himself as Chase Daniels.  Little did I know he was one of the best CrossFitters in the Southeast Region.

Second life changing experience

My second, and greatest life changing experience was when I meet my wife Kristal at the Box.  I remember the first time I saw her.  She was a tiny little thing (5 feet tall) with beautiful blonde hair.  She was doing air squats 150 miles per hour and she scared the CRAP out of me.  She was intense to say the least.  After about two months I developed enough courage to talk to her.  I remember it differently, but she said all I did was complain that I was never going to complete a WOD at the RX standard.  She said she was sick of hearing it so she was going to make it her goal that I did.  We didn’t hang out outside of the gym until a few months later when we got together to go for a beach run.  One thing lead to another and now we have been happily married for over three years.  We have an amazing 2 1/2 year old son and also welcomed our daughter into this world earlier this year.

There are so many more memories I have from going to CrossFit that I would be writing forever.  We have met so many great people that have not only turned into friends but extended family.  From sweat angels, to scraped shins from a box, ripped hands, the occasional visit from “Pukie”, and much, much more. CrossFit is not just a workout for me.  CrossFit is a way of life, a community, and a family.

The passion that changed into a career

After much discussion with my wife, I made the difficult decision to leave the police department, and open a CrossFit box with the intention of becoming one of the top training facilities in Palm Beach County for overall health.  I am striving to achieve a community involved environment inside and outside the walls of my box.  I provide training that provides results for the fittest of athletes to the couch potato that wants to change their lives (like I did).  We are educators, listeners, supporters, and a shoulder to cry on if need be.  I also have a huge passion for helping kids.   My longer term goal is to fight childhood obesity by incorporating CrossFit Kids into my box and local schools.  A large portion of Coral Reef CrossFit is educating each member to become their own coach inside the gym and in life.

Coral Reef CrossFit stands to improve your family.  It is your second favorite place (your bed being #1 of course).  It is where you thought you came to simply knock out the WOD, but in return you got so much more…a second family.  It is where you come to laugh, sweat, cry, bleed (darn boxes), and maybe puke.  It’s where you leave with confidence, respect, dedication, and loyalty. There are only winners and supporters within our four walls.  It is a support system in good times and bad.  It is where you hang out during your free time.  It’s where you come to get away from the everyday grind, to blow off some steam, and to have fun.  All of this results in an improvement in the way you view yourself, your life, your family, your career, your health, your fitness, your success, and your future and I cannot wait to see you in the box and starting on your own journey.
